At Castlebrae pupils are given the opportunity to study Mandarin Chinese thanks to a partnership with Swire Chinese Language Centre Edinburgh (SCLCE). SCLCE was established in 2016 with the generous support of the Swire Chinese Language Foundation.

The Centre is a collaborative venture between many schools across Edinburgh and gives pupils the opportunity to discover the Chinese language and culture in depth.

All pupils in S1 and S2 will have one period per week with the Mandarin teacher and will follow similar topics to those learnt in Spanish and French. These include greetings, family, school life, hobbies, food and drink and countries and nationalities.

Pupils in S3 will then begin learning from the National course, with the aim of achieving National 4 or National 5 by the end of S4.

All pupils who have chosen to study Mandarin beyond BGE will be given the opportunity to visit China in a trip that is run every two years, funded by the Swire Foundation

In October 2018, 10 Castlebrae pupils took part in a once in a lifetime 10-day trip to Beijing. Pupils visited famous sites such as the Great Wall of China, tried some fantastic Chinese delicacies and got to practice lots of Mandarin language and culture skills.
